If you get on the wrong side of a faction, they will attack you whenever you encounter them in space. You will also have to bribe the security guards to gain access to their space stations. Whenever you are considered hostile to a faction, a diplomat will appear occasionally in the Space Lounges, offering to restore your reputation to neutral for around 12,000 to 16,000 credits.
Signatures are an effective alternative to using diplomats, allowing you to fake your identity and make you look like a native Vossk, Terran, Nivelian, or Midorian to other pilots, though at the risk of being hostile to the opposing faction.
